Tuesday premiered the new season of Sons of Anarchy. Keep in mind this show is not for the faint of heart. It also is under no circumstances for children to view. With that said I am a fan. I have been since it premiered 5 seasons ago. This weeks episode was in keeping with Kurt Sutter’s vision of the story (Kurt is the shows creator). Gritty, intense and controversial.
Mr Sutter from the first line written has given a story that is a cross between raw humanity and passion for life with love and loyalty to family as the glue. If you have watched from the beggining, you would see the growth of complex characters with emotion and drive, but with the moral compass sometimes out of wack. The actors cast have been impressive at every turn. With an ‘adult’ oriented story, and I emphasize ‘adult’, the viewer can see a side of life they may not have seen before.
The episode this past Tuesday had its twists and turns that threw its viewers for Grand Canyon size loops. But there is one twist that has started a bit of a fire. The ‘Sons of Anarchy’ (or SAMCRO) are an outlaw motorcycle club that deals guns to make its living. Tuesday a child had somehow gotten ahold of one of these weapons, took it to school and murdered his class. This storyline, which no one saw coming, has brought out both outrage and support for the show and it’s creative team.
Since the tragedy at Sandyhook Elementary school in Newtown CT, the thought of our children being brutally murdered is just to aweful to comprehend. The show and its team have taken a great deal if heat for what was aired, especially Mr Sutter.
Now for my opinion on the subject, and I know not everyone will agree with my view on this. I am proud of what Mr Sutter and his team did and the way they did it. It brought back to the forefront the conversation of gun violence and the saftey of our children. I cannot remember the last time I heard anyone speak of background checks for gun purchases or school safety. The conversation went silent. Everyone got quiet. This isn’t a subject that can be walked away from or hidden neatly in a drawer. But they are speaking about it now, because of Kurt Sutter. The link that follows is to the YouTube show called WTFsutter that Mr Sutter puts out for his fans. If you watch you can see for yourself that he doesn’t take this lightly and what his intensions realy are:
The one thing that everyone if is failing to acknowledge while they complain is that no one was actually hurt. It’s a work of fiction. While it may strike a nerve, it reignited the conversation that never should have been allowed to die. Our children deserve for this country to have the conversation.
I thank you Mr sutter, your cast and crew, for doing what you do. I am proud to call myself a fan.
