Netflix is Evil, to its core. Putting entire series on its format which ultimately leads to binge watching. Especially now that the Netflix App can continue to the next episode without you having to do anything. My most recent find in this ridiculously cruel universe is the BBC’s series ‘Sherlock’.
As a fan of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic character, I have always had a specific vision of what Sherlock Holmes looks like and how he carried himself. That vision pretty set in concrete by the late great Basil Rathbone. He pretty well set the standard for what the detective is. Now entering into my universe, the man called Benedict Cumberbatch. Tall with a thin build, a unique aire about him and a voice that makes you want to listen, he brings to the world a new kind of mysteriousness to Doyle’s vision. (And from a woman’s point of view, nice to look at, too!)
This Victorian era character fits in very well in modern times. He makes you root for a ‘High Functioning Sociopath’. But Mr. Cumberbatch is something different. His uniqueness is memorable. A man of both stage and screen, he knows how to make you look at the subtleties of the character not just the ‘in your face’ way about him. The same can be said for other parts he has undertaken. Specifically when he portrayed ‘Khan’ in ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’. I was highly skeptical and suspicious. But I think Mr. Montalban would have approved as he set the standard for that character as well. He pulled the role of the villain off brilliantly.
With the fan base as large as it has become, and the love the world has for the detective, I can see him being around for some time to come.
(And he is still nice to look at!!!)
