I’ve #CutTheCord with @Xfinity, in a manner of speaking…

Well I did it.  I cut the cord.  No more cable TV.  Amongst everyone I have told so far, the opinion has been split down the middle.  Have have been completely congratulatory.  The other half, well, pretty much think I am insane.  Actually can’t really argue with the later of the two.  It has been 2 weeks now since I made the leap and am still getting used to the changes.  But I know I made the right choice the more I think about it.  And here is why, at least for me.

First and foremost for reasons why I made the move, MONEY.  I was paying a fortune for what I was getting.  I had the full package with @Xfinity Comcast, Full movie and sports packages with high-speed internet and phone service.  That was costing me, after fees and peripherals, in upwards of $220+ a month.  400 channels and I maybe watched 20 of them on a regular basis.  With my cell bill, $120/mo, and Netflix subscription, $8/mo, I was up to $348 per month. That’s more than my car payment.

Now I am paying $60/mo for my internet (still with @Xfinity for that, unfortunately), my cell phone, Netflix, and adding Hulu Plus for $8/mo so I can still see my shows.  That is $196.  The savings amounts to about $2000 a year.  That’s not a small bit of change.

“What about watching movies?  You love your movies.”  That is another point that those who were opposed to my plan would ask of me.  Well that is where another app comes in.   Vudu Logo

Vudu is an online #VOD (Video On Demand) pay service, just like you can get with cable.  But here is the thing, it can actually be cheaper than what @Xfinity had to offer and with more choices.  Also with Vudu, if you choose to take advantage of it, can buy a season pass for your favorite show(s) if they are not offered on any of the streaming services you may subscribe to.  I admit I so have a pass for Sons of Anarchy.  It’s the last season of the show.  And I own it for ever on top of getting to see the episodes as soon as they air instead of having to wait for them to start streaming on Netflix a year later.  But that is only if you can afford it.  It costs about $25.00 per show.

As far as News and Weather goes, well I read about 20 news publication’s RSS feeds everyday.  And the Weather Cannel has their apps.  So both of those areas are covered.  But there was one last query from my skeptics that needed to be covered.

In their brains, I would be watching everything on my phone or laptop.  That my TV’s would just sit there and collect dust.  Wrong again.  I have a 43 inch Samsung Plasma in the living room and a 40 inch Samsung LCD in the bedroom.  Both equipped with either a Chromecast or Roku Streaming stick.  With both I can stream everything I watch and still see crystal clear 1080p HD on both.

In midst of convincing them I managed to convince myself I made the right move for all the reasons I stated above.  Cutting the cord is a trend that has just begun.  And now with HBO announcing the other day they will be launching their own stand alone streaming service with I am sure other channels soon to follow suit, this is a trend that will continue, putting companies like @Xfinity and Time Warner Cable in serious jeopardy.
