#LLAP: Leonard Nimoy, You Are and Always Will Be An Inspiration

On Friday, whole sitting in my car at lunch, I heard of the passing of Leonard Nimoy.  I was struck with a sense of sadness.  No, I did not know him personally, never saw him at a convention, or was ever in the same room.  But throughout my life, he was an inspiration.

As a child, I was introduced, by my father, to the world of ‘Science Fiction’.  One of the first movies I ever remember watching in a movie theater was Star Wars. After that was Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I was only 8 when I saw it for the first time.  The tv series for Star Trek was in syndication, but I had not ever watched it.  But seeing the movie sparked my interest in space and the universe beyond the world I already knew.

The character of SLN3pock gave us pure logic in the way we think of our galaxy and about science .  The man behind the character, so beloved by his fans, gave us more. Most don’t realize that there was much more the him than pointy ears.  The first time I visited his website, I was not only amazed, I was in awe of the man himself. Not just an actor, he was a director, author, motivational speaker, and beyond.

WOW!  I never thought someone could or would show us the world as it is, far from how most want us to see it as they want it to be.  Click on the link above and see for yourself, please. I was especially impressed by ‘The Full Body Project’, real women who are not intimidated or in fear of how they are viewed in the world. Mr. Nimoy was a man who dared everyone to think outside the box and not be afraid to show all of us what is real in this world.

LN3Later in his life, he came back to what made him loved around the world to begin with, Spock.  He gave this beloved icon to a whole new generation, passing the torch to a new caretaker, if you will, to carry on the mantle and keep the legacy he helped create.  When I saw Mr. Nimoy on-screen LN4with actor Zachary Quinto, I was not only impressed, I was pleased with the choice that director JJ Abrams made when reinventing the franchise. It was as though seeing the 2 Spock’s on-screen together that the elder was giving his blessing  to the new, while still paying tribute to the past.  It was a true honor that I hope the new cast will treasure.  I hope they carry that honor with them in everything they do.

As a hopeless and eternal nerd and sci-fi fan, Leonard Nimoy had and will always have my respect, my gratitude and my endless admiration for his entire body of work.  It will continue to inspire me for as long as I live. I just hope that I can live up to the example he set for the world.

Live Long and Prosper.
